Taxonomic Name: Ficus mclealandii `Alii'
Mulberry Family
Tree or Shrub
In many ways the Ali fig is superior to the better-known weeping fir tree. Unlike the weeping fig, the Ali does not drop a large number of leaves whenever it is moved or otherwise disturbed. Further, it tolerates low light levels that would be the death of its counterpart. But despite these attributes, the Ali fig has not been as popular as it deserves to be. It's true that its dark, willow-like leaves are larger than the weeping fig's, and that they give the Ali a somewhat different look--but that's all for the better, since it keeps the plant from being a horticultural cliché. Given the Ali fig's attractiveness, it's a shame that it isn't used more, both in the home and in the office. The Ali is one of the five most dependable houseplants currently available.
How to Care for Your Plant:
LIGHT: The Ali fig will tolerate everything from direct sunlight to mere artificial lighting; in fact, the Chicago Botanic Garden Indoor Gardening guidebook lists it as a low-light selection. But the Ali fig is probably happiest in bright indirect or morning sunlight (for example, by a northern or eastern window).
WATERING: Make sure the soil surface dries between waterings. When the soil surface is dry to the touch, water the plant thoroughly. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water for more than thirty minutes.
FEEDING: Keep in mind that next to overwatering, overfertilizing is the most common cause of houseplant death. During active growth, use an all purpose houseplant fertilizer applied at one-quarter the frequency and concentration listed in the product directions.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: If your plant grows larger than you want it to be, you can prune the stems back to the desired length. Be careful, though: in common with other fig species, the Ali fig bleeds a milky latex sap that may stain carpeting and clothes permanently.
