Because they have been separated from their Northern Hemisphere counterparts for millions of years, the cone-bearing plants of the Southern Hemisphere tend to look very different from the pines, spruces, and junipers we know so well. An excellent case in point is the African fern pine, a magnificent tree species that has intricate, fern-like foliage with a handsome forest green cast. The overall form defined by the leaf color and the gracefully drooping branches, is hazy, almost ghost-like, which makes this selection an excellent "statement plant" for well-lit and spacious locations indoors.

How to Care for Your Plant:

LIGHT: Some direct sunlight (for example, in a southern or western window) is best, but your African fern pine will probably also survive in bright indirect sunlight (as in an unobstructed eastern or northern window).

WATERING: Make sure the soil surface dries between waterings. When the soil surface is dry to the touch, water the plant thoroughly. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water for more than thirty minutes.  

FEEDING: Feed sparingly and only when the plant is actively growing. Use a high-nitrogen (high first number) houseplant fertilizer at one-quarter the concentration and frequency listed in the product directions.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Your African fern pine will be happiest if the humidity level does not drop below 50%. Consider using a room humidifier nearby to mitigate the drying effects of indoor heating and air-conditioning systems.
