Blue Violets pictured in front of this Signature arrangement |
Botanic Name: Saintpaulia
Ounce for ounce and inch for inch no other houseplant provides so much delight. African violet collecting has been one of the most popular horticultural pastimes for over a century. These little gems come in an amazing array of flower forms and colors and are easy to care for |
LIGHT: Bright indirect sunlight (an eastern or bright northern window). If only artificial lighting is available, use bright fluorescent fixtures; they should be kept on at least 16 hours a day.
WATERING: Make sure the soil surface dries between watering; water thoroughly very soon thereafter. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water more than 30 minutes.
FEEDING: Use a specially formulated African violet fertilizer. Follow the product directions.
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS: Leaves will develop yellow blotches if they are splashed with cold water. Use room-temperature water and avoid wetting the foliage. Also, check periodically for mealy bug insects. These pests can be killed and carefully removed with Q-tips soaked in rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol.
