Taxonomic Name: Allamanda cathartica
Dogbane Family
Woody and Shrubby Vining Plant
The fast-growing allamanda is sometimes also called the golden-trumpet plant, and for good reason. When given the conditions it prefers, it produces many trumpet-shaped flowers that range in color from golden yellow to a lighter, brighter canary yellow.
Like many fancy blooming tropical vines offered at the Chalet greenhouse, the allamanda makes an excellent summertime patio plant, but it can also be kept indoors year round. It does especially well when grown in a conservatory or greenhouse setting.
How to Care for Your Plant:
LIGHT: At least several hours of bright, direct sunlight per day are preferable. If your plant is not grown in a greenhouse or conservatory, place it in an unobstructed southern or western window.
WATERING: Water as soon as the soil surface is dry to the touch. At that point, water the plant thoroughly. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water for more than thirty minutes.
FEEDING: Feed only when the plant is actively growing or producing flower buds. At that point, use a high-phosphorous (high middle number) houseplant fertilizer at one-quarter the concentration and frequency listed in the product directions.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: High humidity--all too lacking in most modern homes, especially in winter--is essential. If your plant is not in a greenhouse, use a room humidifier near your plant, or place a water-filled pebble tray under the plant (do not let the water in the tray soak back into the plant's pot).
