Taxonomic Name: Aphelandra Squarrosa
Acanthus Family Herbaceous Plant The zebra plant, in common with most acanthus-family houseplants, is an especially showy species. It features both attractive, canary-yellow flowers and dramatic striped foliage. It may require a little more attentiveness than less striking indoor plants, but the zebra plant is well worth the extra effort. |
How to Care for Your Plant:
LIGHT: Direct morning sunlight (as in an eastern window) or bright indirect sunlight (as in an unobstructed northern window) is best. Hot, day-long sunlight may burn the foliage; poor illumination will make the plant grow lanky.
WATERING: Keep the plant's soil evenly moist, but not sopping. One extended spell of parched soil may kill your plant. But note that the plant should not stand in saucer water for more than thirty minutes.
FEEDING: Feed your zebra plant only when it is actively growing. To encourage flowering, use a high-phosphorus (high middle number) houseplant fertilizer. Apply at half the concentration and frequency listed in the product directions.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: In winter, keep your zebra plant in a warm, draft-free location. As is often the case with houseplants, the higher the humidity, the better.
