Taxonomic Name: Schefflera (formerly Dizygotheca) elegantissima
Aralia Family
Shrub
The bronzy, highly dissected, outward-pointing foliage of this South Seas native ensures the plant's status as a favorite with houseplant fanciers. Also known as "spider aralia," this species has a feathery texture that contrasts nicely with such broadleaved plants as philodendrons and peace lilies.
In the indoor environment, the false aralia usually attains a maximum height of about seven feet.
How to Care for Your Plant:
LIGHT: Placement near an eastern or northern window, or in another spot where there is bright indirect sunlight, is preferred. The false aralia may survive for a while in artificial lighting, but it will tend to drop leaves more readily.
WATERING: Make sure the soil surface dries between waterings. When the soil surface is dry to the touch, water the plant thoroughly. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water more than thirty minutes.
FEEDING: When the plant is not growing new leaves, feed the plant sparingly--once every few months. When the plant is growing actively, however, feed every 3 weeks with an all purpose houseplant fertilizer.
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS: Leaf drop may be a problem, particularly if the plant is watered improperly or subjected to a sudden change of environment. Check periodically for mealy bugs and scale insects. These pests can be controlled with careful insecticide applications.
