Scientific Name: Gymnocladus dioicus
Category: Deciduous Tree
Habit: Upright
Growth rate: Slow
Landscape benefits and culture: The Kentucky coffee tree gets its name from the hard seeds it produces every year. These seeds form in pods that fall from the tree in cooler months, and need to be cleaned up. Fallen seed pods and seeds could be a tripping hazard. Male trees (like the cultivar 'Espresso') do not produce seed pods, and are a lower maintenance choice. Tree has an interesting branching pattern and handsome bark, giving it some winter interest.
Pruning: Late winter/Early spring
Potential pests/issues: Seed pods create litter problems.
