Landscape benefits and culture: Glossy foliage can be a dark green, dark purple, or a varigated pink-purple, often has a bronze fall color. The nuts that the tree produces are edible.  The dense branching habit of this tree causes it to cast heavy shade, making it difficult to grow turf or other plants beneath it. European beeches have a low branching habit, which makes it difficult to use as a street or lawn tree. Prefers full or part sun and acidic well draining soils. Does not tolerate wet or heavy clay soils.
