Scientific Name: Ginkgo biloba
Category: Deciduous tree
Habit: Upright, varies by cultivar
Growth rate: Slow
Landscape benefits and culture: A striking shade tree with unique green leaves that turn golden yellow in the fall. Fall leaf drop often occurs rapidly, sometimes in the course of one day. Be sure to purchase male trees, as female trees produce fruit that has an offensive odor and require clean up. Female trees can take decades to start fruiting, leading to a nasty surprise. Gingkos are tolerant of poor site conditions, salt, drought, and pollution, making them an excellent street tree. These trees prefer sun, and can be planted in a wide range of soils.
Pruning: Late winter or early spring.
Potential pests/issues: Fruits are messy and have a horrible smell. Can be damaged by caterpillars, and bacterial leaf scorch.
