Landscape benefits and culture: A sturdy shrub that can tolerate poor site conditions like drought, pollution and salt. Foliage can be green or dark purple, and small yellow flowers appear in the spring. The plant is covered with sharp spines, ideal for keeping unwanted visitors away, but not suitable for spaces with children or pets. Prune down to the base of the plant every 5 to 7 years to rejuvenate the plant.
