Scientific Name: Acer spp.
Category: Deciduous tree
Habit: Upright, varies by species and cultivar
Growth rate: Fast (Except Paperbark Maples, which have a slow growth rate)
Landscape benefits and culture: Various maple species are popular landscape plants, as they often have attractive foliage during the growing season and the fall, establish and grow quickly, and are relatively trouble free. Most maples prefer full or partial sun and soil that is acidic, moist and well drained. But they can often tolerate a variety of soils. Use tree wrap or paint to protect the trunk from frost cracking in the winter/early spring.
Pruning: Late winter or early spring.
Potential pests/issues: Frost cracking can damage the thin bark causing sap to leak out. Can be susceptible to bagworms, anthracnose, maple leaf tar spot, and verticillium wilt.
