Scientific Name: Platanus occidentalis (Sycamore/American Planetree), Platanus x acerifolia (London Planetree)
Category: Deciduous tree
Habit: Upright, Pyramidal
Growth rate: Fast
Landscape benefits and culture: Planetrees are fast growing trees with green foliage and white/gray exfoliating bark. They are adaptable to many different conditions and soil types, provided they are in full sun. Great shade trees that are tolerant of urban conditions. Globular fruits, bark and broken twigs can create a litter problem which can require regular clean up. The litter and rapid growth rate make planetrees a poor choice for street or parkway planting.
Pruning: Late winter or early spring.
Potential pests/issues: Can be susceptible to anthracnose, canker diseases, bagworms, borers, sycamore lace bug and powdery mildew. Cleaning up twigs, bark, branches and fruit that the tree sheds can be cumbersome.
