With their soft, dark green needles, variety of shapes and easy care yews (Taxus) are a popular choice for foundation plantings, hedging and accents. They tolerate urban pollution as well as heavy shade. Plant them in sun or shade in loose, well-drained soil and they’ll be perfectly happy. To maintain a particular shape trim after the spring growth has hardened off, usually in mid to late June. Winter damaged foliage may be trimmed in March while the plant is still dormant. Avoid fall trimming as it will trigger new growth that may freeze back.
