Arborvitae Plant List

Arborvitae is a versatile group of evergreens that offers a range of uses in the landscape. Pyramidal forms
are great for hedging, screening or specimen use while globe types work well as accents or foundation plants. Arborvitae perform best in full sun and in moist, well-drained soil. Tolerant of our alkaline soils and generally pest-free, arborvitae require little, if any, pruning to maintain their distinct shapes.

Degroot’s Spire	Columnar	10’x3’	2-3’	Slow growing. Dark green foliage on spiral branchlets bronzes slightly in winter. Wonderful as a vertical accent plant. Best sheltered from strong winter winds.
Emerald Green	Pyramidal	15’x4’	3-4’	Moderate growing. Bright green foliage maintains good color over the winter. Naturally narrow, tight form. Tolerant of heat and cold.
Fire Chief	Round	4’x4’		Slow growing. Dwarf plant with striking orange-red tipped foliage, enhanced by full sun. Tidy form needs little pruning. Strong color accent in the garden.
Franky Boy	Pyramidal	6’x4’	4-5’	Slow growing. Dwarf variety of Chinese arborvitae with fine, thread-like greenish yellow foliage. Winter color is orangey bronze. Best color and form if sheared yearly.
Green Giant Western	Pyramidal	30’x15’	6-10’	Rapid growing. Very attractive, medium to dark green, shiny, aromatic foliage is bronze-tinted in winter. Tolerates partial shade. Good as an accent or large hedge. Deer dislike the foliage.
Grune Kugel Western	Globe	3’x4’		Slow growing dwarf form with coarsely textured, dark green foliage. The tips turn a bronze color in winter.
Hetz Midget	Globe	2’x3’		Slow growing dwarf form makes a perfect accent or low hedge. Rich green foliage on a dense, natural globe shape.
Holmstrup	Broad Upright	10’x5’	3-4’	’ Slow growing. Foliage is densely arranged on branches. Compact form. Good for low screening, small specimen or hedge.
Mr. Bowling Ball	Globe	3’x3’		Slow growing. Dense, finely textured sage-green foliage forms a perfect compact globe. Foliage resembles juniper or false cypress.
Norm Evers	Broad Upright	12’x8’		Moderate growing. Fine-textured lacy foliage, a handsome teardrop shape and superior hardiness distinguish this selection. Foliage will turn bronzy over the winter then green up in spring.
North Pole	Pyramidal	15’x4’	3-4’	Moderate growing. A very hardy, winterburn resistant selection from Minnesota. A little narrower that Emerald Green with dense, dark green foliage.
Primo	Upright	4’x1’		Slow growing dwarf with dark green, textured foliage and a naturally sculpted shape. Great in pots or mini gardens.
Pyramidal	Columnar	30’x8’	4-5’	Rapid growing. Dark green foliage. Tall, narrow and formal in outline. Useful as a screen or accent. Avoid windswept sites.
Sugar & Spice Western	Columnar	12’x3.5’	2-3’	Moderate growing. Fine-textured, skinny form of Western arb perfect for smaller spaces. Said to keep its green color in winter.
Sunkist	Broad Pyramidal	10’x8’	4-5’	Moderate growing. Brightly colored foliage contrasts with typical greens in the garden. Spring foliage is lemon yellow deepening to green in summer then orange-green in winter.
Technito	Pyramidal	10’x5’	2-3’	Very slow growing. Dark green foliage. A smaller and very dense version of its parent, Techny. Needs no shearing to stay shapely.
Techny	Pyramidal	15’x8’	4-6’	Slow growing. Dark green foliage does not bronze in winter. Broad-based with stiff branching. Excellent cold tolerance. Use as an accent, specimen or hedge.
Wintergreen	Pyramidal	30’x8’	4-5’	Moderate growing. Textured bright green foliage retains its color all winter. Reportedly more shade tolerant than other upright arbs.
Zmatlik	Upright	15’x4’		Moderate growing. Unique foliage texture and winter color make this arb different from the rest. Medium green, dense, curly foliage turns an intense plum-bronze color in the winter. Good specimen.
