Spring is synonymous with lilac. Many among us, gardeners or not, have fond memories of enjoying the colorful sight and heavenly scent of lilac blooms in May. Not only are lilacs beautiful, they’re also tough and long-lived, performing well in the challenging weather and soil conditions of our area. And deer don’t like them! Various uses include hedges, accents and specimen plantings. They prefer a sunny site for best flowering and are adaptable to soil as long as it is not wet. Pruning is recommended within 6 weeks after flowering to avoid removing next season’s flower buds that set later in the growing season.
