Flowering crabapples (Malus) are perhaps the showiest flowering trees in our spring landscape. In May, before leafing out, the trees burst into bloom creating a breathtaking show of color in reds, pinks or white. In September small red, maroon or gold fruit adorn the trees. Not messy at all, the fruit may stay on the tree through the winter if the birds don’t devour it first. Crabs prefer well-drained soil and require at least 6 hours of direct sun for general health as well as for best flower and fruit development. Little pruning is required. If needed, prune immediately after bloom since most crabapples set buds for the next season in mid-June to early July.
