- Wrap trees to protect them from possible frost cracking or damage from animals.
- If there is a concern about snow or ice breaking branches off of shrubs, tie limbs together with twine and remove snow build up with a broom.
- Wrap broadleaf evergreens (like boxwood or holly) with south exposure, west exposure, or those that are exposed to heavy winds with canvas or burlap to prevent winter desiccation.
- Wrap arborvitae with deer/bird netting to prevent deer from feeding on the foliage.
- Mulch tender or newly planted or perennials with straw or other organic material to give them extra insulation.
- Check on stored bulbs and produce for signs of rot.
- Make notes for next year's garden.
January
- Remove snow build up from shrubs as needed.
- Check younger trees for trunk injuries from animals or frost cracking.
- Begin brainstorming for the next growing season
February
- Begin designing your garden for the spring.
- Prune landscape plants that are not early spring bloomers.
- Check and repair any lawn or garden tools.
- Order seeds for your garden
- Check any tree wrap, burlap or netting to ensure it is still in place and working.
- Start seeds for cool season vegetables.
