Winterizing hydrangea shrubs is an important part of their care. Panicle and bigleaf hydrangeas (H. paniculata and H. macrophylla) are the most common types grown in home landscapes, and both benefit from pruning in fall. This pruning helps to encourage strong growth and lots of flowers the following season. Start by pruning away any dead or damaged branches. Then, cut back the remaining stems by about one-third. Next, apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the shrub to help protect it from cold temperatures. Finally, water the shrub deeply to help it prepare for winter. With a little bit of care, your hydrangea shrubs will thrive all season long.
