Ascocentrums are a superb choice for the houseplant fancier who has a good southern exposure but little room for larger plants. These diminutive orchids are close relatives of the much heftier vandas, and like them they need strong light and plenty of water. Native to the Far East, ascocentrums bear flowers with crisp, electric colors ranging from orange to pink and red.

How to Care for Your Plant:

LIGHT: The more direct sunlight your plant gets, the better. If possible, place your plant in an unobstructed southern window, or in a sunny spot in a greenhouse.

WATERING: Water your plant whenever the surface of the potting mixture is dry. At some times of the year, your plant may require daily waterings.

FEEDING: Do not feed the plant when it is dormant. Feed only when the plant is actively growing or producing flowers. If your orchid is potted in bark, use a high-nitrogen (high first number) orchid fertilizer. If potted in any other medium, use a high-phosphorous (high middle number) orchid fertilizer. In both cases, apply the food with every other watering at the concentration listed in the product directions. 

TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY:  Ascocentrums should not be exposed to temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Like most orchids, ascocendrums thrive only in fairly humid conditions. Keep the humidity level at a minimum of 40% with the help of a humidity tray, gravel tray, or room humidifier.
