Taxonomic Name: Rumohra adiantiformis
Wood Fern Family
Nonflowering Herbaceous Plant
The florist's trade is deeply indebted to this Southern hemisphere native. Each year, its graceful, dark green fronds are used in untold thousands of flower arrangements. What is less well known is that the leather fern is also an excellent houseplant, providing that its basic needs are met. Fern collectors quickly learn that this species is happiest growing among other plants of its kind, rather than as one forlorn specimen in a forgotten corner of the home or office.
How to Care for Your Plant:
LIGHT: Bright indirect sunlight is best, such as near an unobstructed northern or eastern window. Your plant may also tolerate bright artificial lighting, at least for a few months.
WATERING: Water as soon as the soil surface feels dry to the touch. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water for more than thirty minutes.
FEEDING: Feed the plant only when it is actively growing, and then do so sparingly. Use a high-nitrogen (high first number) houseplant fertilizer applied at half the concentration and frequency listed in the product directions.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Like almost all ferns, leather ferns need high humidity. Consider placing a water-filled pebble tray under your plant, or place the plant near a room humidifier.
