Taxonomic Name: Asparagus Densiflorus 'Sprengeri'
Lily Family Herbaceous Plant
The common names given to plants can often be more misleading than helpful. In the case of the asparagus fern, the common name is half right: it isn't a true fern, but it is a true asparagus. It does not produce edible shoots the way its close relative, the garden asparagus, does. Rather, it makes a unique, long-lasting foliage plant that is most effectively used in hanging containers. |
How to Care for Your Plant:
LIGHT: Direct sunlight or bright indirect sunlight is preferable. Some leaf burn may occur in an unshaded southern or western window. The asparagus fern will survive in bright artificial lighting for at least several months.
WATERING: Water the plant thoroughly as soon as the soil surface is dry to the touch. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water more than thirty minutes.
FEEDING: Use an all purpose houseplant fertilizer during periods of active growth. Follow the fertilizer product directions. Feed sparingly when the plant is dormant.
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS: If the plant is allowed to dry out entirely, or if it is subjected to low light for an extended period, it will drop its needlelike foliage readily. Also, be careful when handling the plant; its stems bear prickles that can pierce the skin.
