Taxonomic Name: Mandevilla x amabilis
Dogbane Family
Woody Vining Plant
Few indoor plants impart a feeling of sultry southern climes better than the mandevilla does. When it receives the right care and conditions, this vigorous hybrid loves to grow up trellises and put forth exotic, pink, trumpet-shaped flowers. The mandevilla is a particularly good selection for the sunny conservatory or greenhouse, where the plant will not suffer from low humidity or weak light.
How to Care for Your Plant:
LIGHT: At least several hours of bright, direct sunlight per day is essential for your mandevilla's long-term survival. If your plant is not grown in a greenhouse or conservatory, place it in an unobstructed southern or western window.
WATERING: Water the plant thoroughly whenever the soil's surface becomes dry. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water for more than thirty minutes.
FEEDING: Feed only when the plant is actively growing or producing flower buds. At that point, use a high-phosphorus (high middle number) houseplant fertilizer at half the concentration and frequency listed in the product directions.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: High humidity--all too lacking in most modern homes, especially in winter--is essential. Use a room humidifier near your mandevilla, or place a water-filled pebble tray under the plant (do not let the water in the tray soak back into the plant's pot).
