Taxonomic Name: Citrus species
Rue Family
Small Trees
The citrus genus comprises such favorite fruit-bearing species as orange, lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, and kumquat. Growing these trees under glass has been a horticultural preoccupation in northern European countries since at least the 1600s, but the outdoor cultivation of citrus plants began centuries earlier, in the Far East. All commonly cultivated citrus plants bear white flowers that exude one of the most appealing fragrances in nature.
How to Care for Your Plant:
LIGHT: Direct southern or western sunlight is required.
WATERING: Make sure the soil surface dries briefly between waterings. When the soil surface is dry to the touch, water the plant thoroughly. At least a little water should come out of the pot's bottom drainage holes, but the plant should not stand in saucer water for more than thirty minutes.
FEEDING: Throughout the year use a high-nitrogen (high first number) fertilizer once a month, at half the concentration listed in the product directions. From February through May, supplement with a blossom booster-type (high middle number) fertilizer once a month. Use the concentration listed in the product directions.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Check periodically for aphids and spider mites. The latter can be discouraged by keeping your citrus plant in a high humidity environment (50% humidity or more). Increased humidity also improves the plant's overall vigor.
