Fall is the perfect time to plant spring flowering bulbs. In the Chicago area, late September and and early to mid October are the best times to plant as most bulbs need an extended period of cold temperatures to flower. Here is how to have a successful bulb planting:
- Select your planting site. Most bulbs like areas with full sun and well drained soil. Avoid areas with heavy shade and heavy clay soil. It may be helpful to mark out where you are planting for planning purposes.
- Dig a hole that is about 3 times the height of your bulb. This is shallow enough for the bulb's leaves to emerge, but deep enough to discourage theft from wildlife.
- Place the bulb in the hole with it's point facing up and fill the hole with soil. Tamp down the surface to prevent erosion.
- Apply a balanced fertilizer to the area, and dress the area with compost or mulch if desired.
- Wait for spring to see your beautiful blooms
